Disaster Volunteers assist with chemical spill in Midland NC June-12-2009

Concord, NC , June 12, 2009-- The American Red Cross of Cabarrus County is currently responding to an ethanol spill in Midland, NC . Around on June 12, 2009, the Red Cross received a call from Cabarrus County Emergency Management asking for canteen and safe haven support in response to the disaster. Volunteers arrived at the Midland Volunteer Fire Department at , opening a reception/service center to provide safe haven for any families who were within the evacuation zone (within a half-mile radius of the spill.) The Red Cross is currently working to determine exactly how many homes were within the half-mile radius evacuation area. The service center is currently being utilized by at least one community member. The four Red Cross volunteers at the service center are also providing canteen support for the emergency workers responding to the clean-up.

 

 

As of , the service center has provided those on the scene with breakfast and snacks, and the Red Cross is currently making lunch preparations.
